Cliffside Modern

THE NEW RIVIERA AT MAYBOURNE

High above Monaco, where the Grande Corniche bends toward Italy, The Maybourne Riviera sits with deliberate intent. Designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, its angular white planes cut sharply into the cliff face, a modernist counterpoint to the Belle Époque palaces below. Floor-to-ceiling glass replaces ornament; light becomes the defining element. Pale mineral surfaces echo the stone of the coastline, while expansive glazing opens uninterrupted views of the horizon. Each volume is composed with restraint, directing attention outward to the shifting drama of sea and sky.

After a week tracing the Côte d’Azur from Nice through Eze and from Saint-Tropez to Cannes, we arrived ready to pause. The pool was our first instinct, an infinity edge suspended above Monaco, water dissolving into sea and sky. The sun was uncompromising, the light almost architectural in its precision. From the water, the coastline unfolded in layers: yachts idling offshore, terracotta rooftops climbing the hillside, the faint roar of seaplanes slicing across the horizon. From this height, the Riviera felt heightened rather than distant.

“I didn’t construct The Maybourne Riviera so much as reveal it, letting the cliff speak, the light dance and the structure breathe.”

Jean-Michel Wilmotte, Architect and Founder of Wilmotte & Associés

Surrenne, Maybourne’s wellness concept first introduced at The Emory in London, has found a natural counterpart here. On the sunlit Côte d’Azur, its philosophy leans into rhythm and fluidity. We were among the first to experience the newly opened facilities, a private sauna and steam ritual, followed by a restorative ‘Ballet Bodywork’ treatment. Magnesium worked methodically into tired muscles; assisted stretches and alternating heat and cooling elements recalibrated tension built from days on the road. The infrared sauna blanket sealed the session. It felt precise and progressive, where traditional therapy met contemporary recovery science. Emerging lighter, movement restored, even the horizon seemed to slow.

Evening drew us upward to abc kitchens riviera. Inspired by Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s New York concepts, the space opens completely to the horizon, dissolving the boundary between interior and terrace. We opted for grilled octopus and a tenderloin, a restrained surf-and-turf suited to the setting. Pink dusk deepened over Monaco. Musicians passed between tables, guitar and maraca shaking softly, a spontaneous rendition of Sacrifice by Elton John carried through the open air. The night felt expansive, theatrical without excess.

Morning returns the Riviera to its clearest expression. Azure stretches uninterrupted beyond the terrace. From bed, the sea fills the frame. A seagull arcs past the panoramic view, its call briefly cutting through the quiet. Below, Monaco resumes its polished choreography — jet skis circling anchored yachts, clay courts already alive with movement. From this height, the Riviera is reduced to its essentials: cliff, sea and light.
